The History of The Oval
Originally a market garden owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the site was transformed into a cricket ground in 1845 when a lease was secured to create a "subscription cricket ground." The Oval quickly became a central hub for cricket, hosting its first first-class match between London and Dartford in June 1724. In 1880, it earned the distinction of hosting England's first home Test match against Australia, marking the beginning of a storied tradition. The following year, in 1882, Australia's victory at The Oval led to the creation of the Ashes, one of cricket's most celebrated rivalries. Beyond cricket, The Oval has been a versatile venue, staging the first FA Cup final in 1872 and early international football and rugby matches, solidifying its place in sporting history.
